Actually, jails are not intended for punishment as much as for growth; a truly successful place of incarceration would not make a criminal miserable but rather inspire them to change their ways. Though the jail may be beautiful and accommodating, if the activities occurring within are helpful to the patrons, it is probably much more beneficial than American jails.

But i did visit rahway state as a youngster for the scared straight program, kept me outa jail, but i have my freedom and my own place by the beach. AND I PAY FOR IT MYSELF, OH i did spend 6 weeks in harris co jail for dui, but it was’nt like that

Showing as this is in Austria far superior to American incarcerate because America does everything wrong. Now send more money.
I do not believe that this facility will dissuade any criminal from further crime. I believe a facility such as this actually becomes a criminal’s “safety net” – in that, should I get caught – no big deal – I get to reside in a Holiday Inn for a few months/years.
No one should ever try to remove punishment from committing a crime – rehabilitation should be at least 85% and punishment 15%. This facility removes any factor whatsever for punishment.

Guess what everyone? American prisons, in all their shitty glory, also do not keep people from committing crimes. And they are not meant to punish people; they’re supposed to rehabilitate people, which they have never done.

That prison is nicer than my apartment. Why does Europe have nicer things than America?
The key purpose of a prison is firstly rehabilitation, secondly to remove certain (not all) rights and privilagesand thirdly to remove from society those people who are a danger to themselves or to others.
You regain your rights and privilages/freedom when you demonstrate either remorse for your actions or personal change/growth.
This prison is admirably suited to the purpose.
To the naysayers I’d like to say could you deal with -
being told when to get up or go to bed
being watched all the time
having no access to family and friends
having no access to luxury items
working for less than a dollar a day
being told what to do and when
no alcohol
no smoking
no late nights
no sex (hetero anyway)
cells often have no windows
no control over your own choices
and many others….
I’ve worked in open prisons in the UK, TVs in cells, internet access, training schemes, sports, DVDs and videos to rent, a tuck shop (small store selling luxuries lke chocolate, coca cola, etc, smoking rooms, lockless cells, cinema screen, etc (the ‘softest’ prisons) and prisoners still hated being there, still commited suicide and still tried to escape.
As someone said, try it for a week, you’ll be screaming to get out.
World’s Most Luxurious Jail, not World Most Luxuriest Jail.
The test is to see the statistics for re-offending criminals. American jails are bursting at the seams full of reoffending criminals. The attitude of “make a jail so terrible that it is scares people to be lawful” clearly has not been working. Many Nordic countries have the view that prison is meant to rehabilitate – that is CLEARLY not the case for the North American prison system. America’s gun toting society has the view that you should kill to show that killing people is wrong (death penalty), or to long them in a box for a few years and think that magically they will come out better for it. Another brilliant move America.
Jails are not bursting at the seams in the U.S. because of re-offenders.
It’s because of the bullshit laws over there, which put people in jail for the slightest offense, even those which have no impact on society whatsoever. Like smoking dope. The “war on drugs” my ass. It’s a bureaucrat’s wet dream – the chance to use up valuable tax dollars on a continual basis to incarcerate otherwise upstanding productive members of society.

think abotu it, you aren’t allowed to see anyone but the other people in the jail. nobody will be anything short of a criminal. you would never get to see your family for a decent amount of time, or in privacy. your life would follow a strict timetable, and you wouldn’t be allowed to engage in any of your hobbies.

Seriously, this place is much nicer than anything I was required to live in for four years. Private room? We had 60 men living in one tightly packed sardine can.
Having said that- If there’s no freedom, comparing one place over another has no merit.

That jail looks even nicer than the Ritz Carlton I stayed at in South Beach, Miami. Do they have to share cells because it looks big enough that everyone can have their own.
Alright, I actually think that this is a very decent thing to do. If we could even step beside ourselves to have one of these facilities in our country we would be a step toward evolving. There is no reason you need an ancient building to rehabilitate*(?) and teach people their lesson. The jails here do not work, as it is people come back to american jails and recommit crimes to get back in, the facility does not stop anything. If we could only take a step back and learn to teach somebody something we might see a change. Bah, who wants to let me come live in there country, i wont intrude, but. Ill come peacefully! And bring the pot.

agreed totally, much of army/navy/air force sevice can be compared to prison life, the routine, the boredom, the “do what I tell you to do” thing etc.

I wouldn’t exactly call being surrounded by cement and steel ‘luxurious’. This jail simply looks clean and fairly new.

First: Fuck everybody who yells PHOTOSHOPPED at the first sign of anything slightly unusual. This could be real, this could be some sort of nice accommodation which is called a jail in this post.

You guys realize that, in some European countries (I believe Austria is included in this), part of the large amount of tax dollars you pay goes toward improving YOUR OWN quality of life, so people tend to have MUCH BETTER living spaces than Americans have. So, yes, while this seems like a great place to live, just about everywhere in the country is pretty nice.
On top of that, most European countries have a very different view on jail than America does. America sees jail as a punishment, whereas Europe sees it as rehabilitation. And only the people who need the most rehabilitation actually go to full-blown jail. Most of them live in their home, are monitored, and have to attend rehab sessions.
So if you honestly think this is better, you should either raise your voice and say that America should go in the same direction or you should move to Europe.
Damn, that’s not a jail cell, that’s a dorm room. I stayed hotels in Athens and in Prague that the two rooms together that were about the size of that dorm room, . . . oops jail cell.
You Yanks got it all wrong. Prison isn’t about punishment, so much as it’s about protecting the public from dangerous criminals. On short term by putting them away, and more permanently via rehabilitation and education. You don’t get law abiding citizens, by treating them like shit, and telling them they’re worse than nothing. All you get is more hardcore criminals, with much less hope for the future, than they had, when they entered prison the first time.
In Denmark (where I live), a new study just showed, that persons serving time in there own homes, wearing fetters (or whatever they’re called. You know thoose anklebracelets with a GPS in them), were about 50% less likely to commit new crimes, compared to people who served time (for the same types of crimes) in prison.
Also, almost all Western-European prisons, are much nicer then almost all American prisons. And it just so happens, that our crimerates are pretty much nonexistent compered to yours.

How unfair to make the Austrian citizens pay so much money to house those who have already abused the Austrian people. In my opinion, most of the people in a jail refuse to be rehabilitated. I think the most fair thing to the other good citizens of the country would be to take the jailbirds out back and shoot them. As a conservative, I always err in favor of helping people!
In response to Justin. I am American and actually work inside a maximum security female facility that houses “lifers” and death row inmates.
Rehabilitation is all over the place, there are more programs available in prisons now than ever. They are given free schooling, vocational education in trades such as electrical, plumbing, automotive etc. They have top notch health care, far better than the average person on the street.
Corrections has been a “family” business for us, at least 4 members of my immediate family have all worked (are working) in prisons. What we have collectively noted is that recidivism has many causes. Believe it or not, there are those who “like” prison (ie: it’s better than their life on the outside). There are also those (many of the younger generation) who carry their prison sentences as a badge of honor that gains them respect. Lastly, not all rehabilitation works the first, second or third time around. One need only watch reality TV shows or read the tabloids to see that that’s true.
Before you go spouting off about what you think you know about the American Justice system, do a little research first, eh?

The notion that prison is for rehabilitation is one of only the last 40 years or so. Prison has been, and should be, primarily punitive with rehabilitative options available to those who wish to use them.

The assertion that prison is a means to rehabilitate has not been empirically proven. Efforts at rehabilitation have not reduced the recidivism rate.

I read most of the comments, some saying it’s still a prison, true, but what better place to be if you had to go to jail. A nicer place that most places I’ve slept in my life, and the food’s regular too, education is free, all the time in the world to pursue some goals, you don’t have to work to support yourself while going to school, or health pursuits, etc. Other than the fact that you’re in jail that would be a pretty sweet place to be, if you had to be in jail. Only thing that really bugs me about the place is that it’s paid for by the people that work for a living. Lucky bastards, but I wouldn’t give up my working life, I’d rather do it on my own. Although, if you’re a real crimminal, a place like that isn’t gonna change you, it’s just gonna you a nice place to stay, between your antics.

The only crimes worthy of jail in my opinion are theft. Murder can ALWAYS be justified, so it’s not a crime in my book. If you steal, you are put in your jail cell, a pine box 6 feet under. Nice and cheap so as not to be a burden on ME the tax payer. If you disagree, then you are wrong and a justifiable homicide is in order.
That prison reminds me of the mental hospital I stayed in. Lots of white, no sharp objects, no escaping…

No matter what it looks like, and these pictures are no doubt designed to make it look at its best, it is STILL A JAIL. If any of you idiots that think it is “too nice” spent even a week in that or any other jail, you would change your minds, if you have any.
I believe everyone in the criminal justice system, cops, lawyers, prosecutors, public defenders, should all have to spend 90 days in jail, incognito. They would come away with a different opinion, for sure.

For anyone complaining about the “luxury”, I have two things to say.
- First, what have you really seen? A tiny room, a tiny gym and a table that has to be shared by who knows how many inmates. If you can’t hope for that, its not that they have easy. It’s that you are fucked.
- Second, take the opposite stance and look at what providing cramped, overpopulated, and in general IMO absolutely depressing facilities controlled by powertripping individuals does to the inmates. And how it works. Crime in the US vs crime in Austria.
Seriously, if you envy a tiny cell and a bit of sunshine you need to do something…

Its more likely this IS a maximum security prison as they usually have better facilities due to the need for security and the length of prison stay.
ALSO the punishment is being SENT to jail being locked away for life or for however long the sentence is, a prison isn’t there to torture the people inside it.
The reason for this is while in jail some lose family, some get stabbed,or killed as it is, most end up very confined and slowly turn insane, the ones not in for life tend to lose touch with the real world so when they are sent back out they are known to commit suicide or commit another crime as bring in jail was all they knew or was easier.
I find people who view ANY sort of prison as a luxurious place as highly uneducated and seemingly unintelligent.

i live near this jail and i can tell you that it is really as beautifull as it looks this pics but there are no murderer in it.
it´s a prison for dealers who are there for some weeks and then they come to an other prison.
